Do You Need a Dedicated Circuit? A Homeowner’s Guide to High-Power Appliances

You buy a new appliance, plug it in, turn it on—and suddenly the breaker trips.

Or maybe you're renovating your kitchen, installing an EV charger, adding a hot tub, or buying a new electric dryer and someone tells you:

"You'll need a dedicated circuit for that."

But what exactly does that mean?

And does every large appliance really need its own circuit?

The short answer is no—not every appliance requires a dedicated circuit.

However, many high-power appliances and pieces of electrical equipment have specific circuit requirements. Whether a dedicated circuit is required depends on the equipment, manufacturer instructions, the electrical load, and applicable requirements of the Ontario Electrical Safety Code (OESC).

If you're adding new electrical equipment to your Ottawa home, here's what you need to know.


What Is a Dedicated Electrical Circuit?

A dedicated circuit is an electrical circuit intended to supply a specific appliance or piece of equipment rather than several unrelated loads throughout your home.

Think of it this way.

A typical general-purpose circuit might supply several:

  • Outlets

  • Lamps

  • Electronics

  • Small household devices

A dedicated circuit, on the other hand, may run from your electrical panel specifically for one appliance or system.

Depending on the installation, that could include its own:

  • Circuit breaker

  • Electrical wiring

The purpose is to provide the equipment with an appropriately designed electrical supply without unnecessarily sharing the circuit with other loads.


Why Do High-Power Appliances Need Special Electrical Planning?

Every electrical circuit has limits.

A small phone charger and a large electric range obviously don't demand the same amount of power.

Higher-demand equipment may require different:

  • Circuit ratings

  • Conductor sizes

  • Breakers

  • Receptacles

That's why you shouldn't assume that because an appliance physically plugs into a receptacle, the existing circuit is automatically appropriate.

1. Electric Ranges and Ovens

Electric cooking equipment can represent one of the larger electrical loads in a home.

A full-size electric or induction range isn't something you simply connect to a standard 120-volt receptacle.

Ontario has specific electrical requirements governing residential electric ranges and their receptacles. ESA's guidance explains that Ontario requires electric range receptacles in applicable dwelling installations, subject to specific exceptions such as certain built-in cooking arrangements.

If you're changing from a gas range to an electric or induction range, have your electrical system evaluated before buying the appliance.

Your electrician may need to consider:

Switching from gas to electric cooking can introduce a substantial new electrical load.

Installing an EV charger doesn't automatically mean you need 200-amp service.

If using a space heater causes:

Installing a higher-rated breaker on wiring that isn't designed for it can create a serious hazard.

If a 15-amp breaker repeatedly trips, the solution isn't automatically:

"Let's install a 20-amp or 30-amp breaker."

The reason for the tripping needs to be identified first.


120 Volts vs. 240 Volts: What's the Difference?

Many everyday household devices operate on 120-volt circuits.

Larger equipment may use 240 volts.

Common examples can include:

  • Electric ranges

  • Electric dryers

But voltage alone doesn't tell you the entire story.

Two 240-volt appliances can have very different current and circuit requirements.

Does Adding a Dedicated Circuit Require an ESA Notification?

Electrical work in Ontario is subject to notification requirements.

ESA states that the Ontario Electrical Safety Code requires almost all electrical work to be reported through a Notification of Work, commonly called a permit.

The person performing the work—either the homeowner where legally applicable or a Licensed Electrical Contractor—should file the notification before work begins.

If you're hiring someone to install a new circuit, make sure you're hiring a properly licensed business.


Who Can Install a Dedicated Circuit in Ontario?

If you're paying someone to perform electrical work in Ontario, ESA says the business must be a Licensed Electrical Contractor (LEC).

ESA states that LECs are the businesses legally authorized to perform electrical work for hire in Ontario.

This is important if you're having appliances installed as part of a larger renovation.

A general contractor, appliance installer, HVAC contractor, or handyperson isn't automatically authorized to perform electrical contracting work simply because they're already working on your property.

Ask:

"Who is the Licensed Electrical Contractor performing the electrical work?"

And ask for their ECRA/ESA licence information.
