Kitchen Renovation Electrical Guide: Outlets, Circuits & Code Considerations in Ontario

A new kitchen can completely transform your home.

New cabinets, countertops, lighting, appliances, and an island may get most of the attention—but there's another part of the renovation that needs to be planned before the walls are closed:

The electrical system.

Modern kitchens use a tremendous amount of electrical equipment. Your refrigerator, microwave, dishwasher, range, countertop appliances, lighting, exhaust equipment, and specialty appliances all need to be considered when designing the electrical installation.

And in Ontario, kitchen electrical work must comply with the Ontario Electrical Safety Code (OESC).

If you're planning a kitchen renovation in Ottawa, here's what you should understand about outlets, circuits, GFCI protection, electrical panels, permits, inspections, and planning your new kitchen properly.


Why Kitchen Electrical Planning Matters

An older kitchen may have been designed when homeowners used far fewer electrical appliances.

Today, a typical kitchen could include:

  • Refrigerator

  • Electric or induction range

  • Dishwasher

  • Microwave

  • Range hood

  • Coffee maker

  • Kettle

  • Toaster

  • Air fryer

  • Blender

  • Stand mixer

  • Wine fridge

Trying to run a modern kitchen on an electrical layout designed decades ago can create problems.

That's why a major kitchen renovation is often an excellent opportunity to evaluate the electrical system rather than simply moving existing outlets around.


1. Kitchen Countertops Need Properly Planned Receptacles

One of the most noticeable parts of a kitchen electrical renovation is receptacle placement.

Ontario has specific requirements governing receptacles serving kitchen counters, islands, peninsulas, and other areas.

ESA publishes detailed guidance explaining how kitchen receptacle requirements apply to different layouts, including open-concept kitchens.

The electrical layout therefore needs to be designed around the actual kitchen plan.

2. Don't Design the Kitchen First and Think About Outlets Later

This is a common renovation mistake.

The homeowner works with the kitchen designer, orders cabinetry and countertops, and only afterward asks:

"Where are we going to put the outlets?"

Electrical planning should happen earlier.

Your kitchen designer, general contractor, appliance supplier, and Licensed Electrical Contractor should ideally work from the same layout.

Before electrical rough-in begins, you should know where major appliances and work surfaces will be located.


3. Countertop Circuits Have Special Requirements

Kitchen countertop receptacles are different from ordinary receptacles elsewhere in the house.

They're expected to supply appliances that can draw significant power.

5. AFCI Protection May Also Apply

GFCI and AFCI sound similar, but they serve different purposes.

GFCI protection primarily addresses certain electrical shock hazards.

AFCI, or Arc-Fault Circuit Interrupter protection, is intended to help protect against certain electrical arcing conditions that can contribute to fires.

Ontario's electrical requirements include AFCI protection for many residential receptacle branch circuits, with specific requirements and exceptions applying to kitchen circuits.

ESA's kitchen guidance specifically addresses which kitchen branch circuits require AFCI protection and which countertop, refrigerator, island, and peninsula circuits may fall under particular exceptions.

This is another reason renovating an older kitchen isn't necessarily as simple as reproducing the original electrical layout.


6. Your Refrigerator Needs to Be Considered Separately

Your refrigerator is one of the few appliances in your kitchen operating essentially all day, every day.

Ontario's kitchen electrical guidance includes specific provisions for refrigerator receptacles and branch circuits. ESA also provides clarification for additional refrigeration equipment such as freezers, mini-fridges, and beverage coolers.

If you're designing a kitchen with:

  • Full-size refrigerator

  • Separate freezer

  • Wine cooler

  • Beverage fridge

tell your electrician during the planning stage.

Don't assume they can all simply share whatever outlet happens to be nearby.


7. Your Dishwasher Needs Electrical Planning

A built-in dishwasher should be incorporated into the electrical design before cabinetry is installed.

Your electrician needs to know:

  • Dishwasher location

  • Manufacturer electrical specifications

  • Cabinet layout

  • Plumbing arrangement

  • Connection method

  • Circuit requirements

This can represent a significant new electrical load.

The electrical requirements depend on the appliance manufacturer's specifications and the existing installation.

Your electrician may need to evaluate:

  • Existing range circuit

  • Conductor size

  • Breaker

  • Receptacle or connection

  • Electrical panel

  • Overall service capacity

This becomes particularly important if you're electrifying several parts of your home at the same time.

But they're not simply cabinets sitting in the middle of the room.

The electrical design may need to account for the island based on its configuration and use.

ESA publishes specific guidance addressing receptacle requirements for kitchen islands and peninsulas.

This needs to be considered before the finished flooring, island, and cabinetry are installed because wiring may need to be routed to the island location.

If your island will include appliances such as:

13. Don't Forget Under-Cabinet Lighting

Under-cabinet lighting can dramatically improve both the appearance and functionality of a kitchen.

It's also much easier to plan while the kitchen is being renovated.

  • Dimmable lighting

  • Smart lighting

Think about where switches and controls should be located and whether you'd like separate control over task lighting and general kitchen lighting.

14. Think About Your Lighting Before Drywall Goes Up

A kitchen may use several layers of lighting:

15. Older Ottawa Homes May Need More Electrical Work

  • Improper previous modifications

Electrical work is different.

Improper connections can remain hidden behind walls for years before creating a problem.

Ontario's ESA states that when you hire someone to perform electrical work, that person or company must be a Licensed Electrical Contractor. A general contractor or handyperson cannot legally perform electrical work for hire unless appropriately licensed.

If your general contractor says:

"My guy handles the electrical."

Ask who the Licensed Electrical Contractor is and verify their ECRA/ESA licence.


17. Your Kitchen Renovation Will Usually Require an ESA Notification

This is something homeowners sometimes call an electrical "permit."

ESA states that almost all electrical work in Ontario requires a Notification of Work. Renovation work involving changes to original wiring, including many repairs and device replacements, falls within ESA's residential renovation process.

If you're hiring a Licensed Electrical Contractor, the contractor files the notification for their electrical work.

ESA specifically tells homeowners not to file the notification on behalf of somebody else doing the work.

Ask your contractor:

"Are you filing the ESA notification for this renovation?"

The answer should be clear.


18. Electrical Notification and Building Permit Are Not the Same Thing

This distinction is important.

An ESA electrical notification is not the same thing as a municipal building permit.

Depending on the scope of your kitchen renovation, other permits may also be required.

ESA explicitly notes that homeowners may need both an electrical notification and a building permit.

Your general contractor or municipality can help determine what additional approvals apply to the overall renovation.


19. Plan for Tomorrow's Kitchen, Not Just Today's

You're already opening walls and investing in a renovation.

Think about what you may want five or ten years from now.

Perhaps that's:

  • Induction cooking

  • Additional countertop appliances

  • Beverage fridge

  • Smart lighting

  • More charging locations

  • Additional kitchen technology

Planning ahead while the walls are open can be much easier than trying to retrofit everything later.
